Abstract

An academic library is one of the largest information sources for international students to obtain learning resources, which have a great impact on their studies. However, most academic libraries currently have not provided adequate multilingual services except English, which makes it difficult for international students whose mother language is not English to perform academic work. Accordingly, the present study defines the customized services for international students as the ones that have been supported in ltiple languages among academic library services and aims to examine their effect on user satisfaction in academic libraries. Furthermore, the study has compared international students’ satisfaction with academic libraries - one that provides appropriate customized services with the other that does not. The surveys have been conducted with Chinese international students in two different universities and a total of 138 responses were analyzed. The study found that the customized services for the international students influenced their satisfaction with library use. In particular, multilingual services had positive effects on satisfaction with services such as brochures/signs, access to and use of resources through the homepage, and user instruction. The findings of the study suggest practical insights on how academic libraries provide effective services for supporting international students’ academic tasks.

Abstract

This study empirically analyzed the effect of media literacy on the formation of the smart divide, which is a multi-faceted digital divide that occurs in the context of the use of smart devices. As a result, most of the factors of media literacy affect the establishment of social relations and social network through the use of smart devices, which, in turn, leads to the expansion of the range of informational and social activities. In addition, media literacy has a significant effect on the competence to evaluate the value of information acquired through the use of smart devices. Based on these results, there can be social disparity between those who have secured media literacy and those who do not from the perspective of informational and social benefits through the use of smart devices, which can function as a mechanism to generate the smart divide.

Abstract

In the foreign language education, learners are an important part of education, however in the Korean language education, the study of learners was insufficient compared to the contents of education, teaching methods and textbooks. Therefore, it is meaningful to analyze how learner research, especially learning strategy research, has been conducted and derive areas that need research for better education. In this study, co-word analysis was conducted on the titles of academic journals and dissertations in order to analyze the learning strategy research in Korean language education. I found it is about “reading” that the most studies related to Korean language learners’ learning strategies were conducted and those studies’ subjects mostly were ‘Chinese international students’ and ‘marriage-immigrants’. In addition, the results of the subgroup analysis on the research topic show four major subgroups: a group related to ‘reading for academic purposes’, a group related to ‘request, rejection, conversation, etc.’, a group related to ‘writing’, and a group related to ‘vocabulary, listening’. This shows that the researchers’ major interests in studying Korean learner’s strategies are “reading” and “speaking” and their studies have been concentrated in the specific areas. Therefore, it is necessary for researchers to study various functions and subjects in Korean language learner’s learning strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose a personalized book recommendation system to promote the use of university libraries. In particular, unlike many recommended services that are based on existing users’ preferences, this study proposes a method that derive evaluation metrics using individual users’ book rental history and tendencies, which can be an effective alternative when users’ preferences are not available. This study suggests models using two matrix decomposition methods: Singular Value Decomposition(SVD) and Stochastic Gradient Descent(SGD) that recommend books to users in a way that yields an expected preference score for books that have not yet been read by them. In addition, the model was implemented using a user-based collaborative filtering algorithm by referring to book rental history of other users that have high similarities with the target user. Finally, user evaluation was conducted for the three models using the derived evaluation metrics. Each of the three models recommended five books to users who can either accept or reject the recommendations as the way to evaluate the models.

Abstract

Regardless of previous educational attempts in youth career education, there are not specific methods for reading to improve career maturity yet. This study aims to identify the reading method based on cognitive aspect which impacts career maturity and the mediation effect of self-efficacy in this process. This study tries to understand the roles of reading by applying the various reading methods suggested in the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. Data was collected through interviews and statistical analysis from a survey completed by middle school students. Findings showed that critical reading affected the decisiveness as well as the confidence of career maturity. Also, emotional reading and creative reading influenced the preparation of career maturity. Critical reading impacted all subvariables of self-efficacy - confidence, self-regulating efficacy, and task difficulty preference. Findings also showed that emotional reading affected self-regulating efficacy. Ultimately, the confidence of self-efficacy partly mediated critical reading and decisiveness. This study contributes to guiding reading instructions for practitioners and school curriculums to develop career maturity and self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study is to create a deep learning based classification model to examine the characteristics of panic disorder and to classify the panic disorder tendency literature by the panic disorder corpus constructed for the present study. For this purpose, 5,884 documents of the panic disorder corpus collected from social media were directly annotated based on the mental disease diagnosis manual and were classified into panic disorder-prone and non-panic-disorder documents. Then, TF-IDF scores were calculated and word co-occurrence analysis was performed to analyze the lexical characteristics of the corpus. In addition, the co-occurrence between the symptom frequency measurement and the annotated symptom was calculated to analyze the characteristics of panic disorder symptoms and the relationship between symptoms. We also conducted the performance evaluation for a deep learning based classification model. Three pre-trained models, BERT multi-lingual, KoBERT, and KcBERT, were adopted for classification model, and KcBERT showed the best performance among them. This study demonstrated that it can help early diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from related symptoms by examining the characteristics of panic disorder and expand the field of mental illness research to social media.

Abstract

This study analyzed humanities and social science (HSS) journals of KCI to examine the multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity in the general and miscellaneous fields (hereinafter referred to as ‘GM fields’), The multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity identified in this study will be a foundation to improve classification of KCI journals in GM fields. Each journal’s multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity were measured by journal-level entropy and document-level entropy, respectively, in the citation relationships. According to the analysis, GM field journals have wide ranges of multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. To improve classification quality of journals in GM fields, the general humanities should be considered as a new classification class for the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary journals in the humanities. Furthermore, this study proposes a strategy to reclassify GM field journals of HSS according to their multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity.

Abstract

This study explored the user’s information needs and information behavior for the development of academic library services. The content analysis of qualitative data showed that the in-depth interview participants have six types of information needs such as ‘suitability, up-to-dateness, uniqueness, reliability, practicality, and convenience’ while going through societal, educational, and research-related changes. Interview participants solved their information needs by acquiring the resources necessary for each individual’s task through information behaviors using information media, human resources and the places. Each participant tried to solve his/her information problem through individual efforts based on their different media and information utilization capabilities. Based on the analysis, this study presented four directions in the development of academic library services. They are an personalized information literacy service, a space to meet the characteristics of information needs, an infrastructure platform for exchanging human resources, and an accessible support service for utilizing information media.
