Abstract

It is necessary to find the practical considerations for applying RDA in building up the bibliographic records by importing RDA records from LC or OCLC in Korea. Especially, it is not easy to apply RDA appropriately because there are many alternatives and options in RDA. Therefore, this study is to grasp the way for applying RDA in building up the bibliographic records by reviewing LC RDA guidelines and analyzing RDA cataloging policies of libraries such as University of Chicago, North Carolina State University, and Standford University. As a result, these libraries have catalogued according to LC RDA guidelines and each library has its own guidelines, i.e., in statement of responsibilities, to transcribe all but exceptionally allow to transcribe only first, in publication statement, to use 264 field or 260 field, and in resource types, to transcribe all types of content, media and carrier or to transcribe 33X with GMD. Therefore followings would be considered for RDA application. First, some variations could be allowed for special situations of libraries in applying RDA and LC RDA guidelines. Second, the hybrid records that describe the core element of RDA to non-RDA records would be written in processing AACR2 to RDA. Third, the display of 33X field would be designed for expressing the resource types.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain information usage behavior of researchers in the field of ocean science and technology. The study mainly collected primary data for advancement of special library services as well as establishment of personalized information services based on personal characteristics such as age, education level, and area of research. The data collection was conducted for two weeks during January 2014, through a web survey to 348 researchers in national ocean research institutions in South Korea. Total of 115 researchers replied. The analysis showed that the most preferred type of information medium was a scholarly journal. Researchers used more foreign published journals compared to Korean ones, while favoring digital formats rather than printed ones. The top channels for information collection were ‘web search’ and ‘affiliated libraries.’ Most pointed out difficulties of data collection were ‘lack of variety of digital resources in affiliated libraries’ and ‘reluctance to use charged information.’ Key elements for satisfactory user experience were ranked in the order of ‘digital library system,’ ‘library staff,’ and ‘library collection’ and so on, which proves the close relationship between library service and information usage service satisfaction. The result of an assessment for demands in special libraries showed that ‘personalized information search service,’ ‘project support service,’ and ‘research direction analysis service’ should be implemented in the future.

Abstract

Due to the recent development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the amount of research publications has increased exponentially. In response to this rapid growth, the demand of automated text processing methods has risen to deal with massive amount of text data. Biomedical text mining discovering hidden biological meanings and treatments from biomedical literatures becomes a pivotal methodology and it helps medical disciplines reduce the time and cost. Many researchers have conducted literature-based discovery studies to generate new hypotheses. However, existing approaches either require intensive manual process of during the procedures or a semi-automatic procedure to find and select biomedical entities. In addition, they had limitations of showing one dimension that is, the cause-and-effect relationship between two concepts. Thus, this study proposed a novel approach to discover various relationships among source and target concepts and their intermediate concepts by expanding intermediate concepts to multi-levels. This study provided distinct perspectives for literature-based discovery by not only discovering the meaningful relationship among concepts in biomedical literature through graph-based path interference but also being able to generate feasible new hypotheses.

Abstract

This study conducted qualitative research to investigate the librarians’ organizational commitment and relations between the commitment and their goal recognition in the university library context with several open-ended, deep interviews with university librarians in order to understand the relations from diverse perspectives. As a result, many participants showed low level of organizational commitment because of their hygiene factors, such as payment, incentives, relations with colleagues, and job conditions as well as motivators including characteristics of the work, sense of accomplishment, responsibility, promotion, and self-improvement. The two factors are considered to have direct impacts on their organizational commitment. Also, the research revealed that positive goal perception was related to motivators and, at the same time, hygiene factors. Accordingly, we concluded that librarians’ perception of goals are closely related to both hygiene factors and motivators. We also identify that a need of a statistical study with a questionnaire survey to confirm the relations between the organizational commitment and goal perception for developing managerial measures for the organizational commitment, and further, for better library performance.
