Abstract

As interdisciplinary research has been dominant in various fields, the purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between interdisciplinarity and research impact in the field of Library and Information Science. For a data set, ten journals ranked as the top of 2011 JCR’s in terms of JIF (Journal Impact Factor) were selected. The citation data of 1,873 articles from the ten journals were collected from the WoS during the period from 2006 to 2010. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, as network analysis was conducted to investigate the interdisciplinarity of LIS field, interdisciplinarity indicators, and research impact factors were statistically analyzed. The findings of this study confirmed the interdisciplinary knowledge structure of the LIS field as previous studies identified. More importantly, this study demonstrated that a positive correlation existed between interdisciplinarity represented as betweenness centrality and research impact.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the intellectual structure of domestic LIS in the 1990s and 2000s using author bibliographic coupling analysis (ABCA). First, cluster analysis and multi-dimensional scaling analysis were performed to examine core subject areas and to map authors in two-dimensional space. Second, network analysis was used to visualize intellectual relationships among subject areas and to reveal the top subject areas for global centrality. Third, the 1990s and 2000s intellectual structures was compared to identify the changes of the intellectual structure over the course of time.

Abstract

In order to achieve effective human resource development in LIS fields, it is essential to have strategies to nurture and utilize those human resources, in relation to supply and demand as well a sound legal foundation supporting those strategies. Such strategies and legal foundation can only be developed from a complete knowledge of the current status of human resources in the LIS and related industries. This study, therefore, conducted research on the basic employment status, employment environment, and an overall analysis of related issues, in order to address policy implications on the effectiveness of human resource development in the LIS field. This research included the current status of policy environments that involve social environment, and related institutions and laws, and human resources developments as well as the current requirements of librarians in the field, based on a demand survey of LIS employment. It was found that first, there are three distinguishable factors in LIS employment: a feminization of librarianship, an increase in temporary posts, and a high entering ratio into the library workplace. Second, while there were only little differences in the given tasks between full-time and temporary employees, the differences in salary and welfare were considerably larger. Third, field requirements for librarian education included a mentoring system with field experts, short-term internships, and librarian apprenticeships, while job requirements included internship or apprenticeship, language skills, various license acquisition, and career management. Fourth, librarians with licenses for related organizations held 20% more librarian licenses overall.

Abstract

During the last decade, increasing use of technology that facilitates information access has changed academic library services. The emergence of information commons is one of the key changes. Most previous studies on information commons have focused on its conception and role. Whereas, considering information commons as a spatial service, this study aims to examine the influence of information commons on user traffic patterns within the library and perception of the library. As the information commons grew into main library service space and facility, it is necessary to explore what influences information commons have on the behavior and recognition of users. Two methods were used. First, observation method was used to record traffic pattern and user behavior. Second, twenty undergraduates and twelve graduates were interviewed regarding the use and recognition of the information commons and the library. The results of the study show that the traffic patterns were different between undergraduate students and graduate students; the location and structure of facilities influences their movement and behaviors; and the recognition of information commons tends to affect the perception of the entire library. The findings may help librarians improve and plan for library spaces to meet user demands.

Abstract

This study describes the meaning of and the formula for Kor-hT, which is a modified index built on the tapered h-index by applying ‘the ranking according to the number of citations of journals’. This study evaluated the de-duplication rate of index values of Kor-hT and analyzed the change in the correlation between the index values and evaluation elements using the Korea Citation Index data from 2008 to 2010. Kor-hT is compared with h-index, tapered h-index, and IF. As a result, Kor-hT appeared to be superior to other indexes on de-duplication rate. It is also shown that there is a very strong positive correlation between the evaluation elements, the number of citations and the number of articles of journals, and the index values of Kor-hT.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze service quality factors that affect user satisfaction of NDSL Open Service (NOS) and to improve standards of open service for sharing information through the user satisfaction survey. User satisfaction indexes were developed to measure the all aspects of the NOS services. The quality index, satisfaction index, and performance index were identified in this survey. According to the survey findings, the levels of social quality and social satisfaction are relatively high, this shows the positive evaluation and expectation of researchers for open services. However, relatively low level is identified in area of service process quality. Therefore, NOS requires method to help easily take advantage of OpenAPI and strategy to increase service process satisfaction and service environment satisfaction.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the current state of digital reference services using electronic bulletin boards in Korean academic libraries and to suggest improvements. Through the examination of 205 academic library websites, 56 libraries were identified to use electronic bulletin for digital references. The digital reference service questions and responses from four libraries were further analyzed: the types of reference question, the structure and accuracy of answers, and digital reference completion time. The implications of this study for future research and practice lie in its provision of a systematic way to design practical guidelines for virtual reference services.

Abstract

This study aims at establishing the identity of teaching Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) domain by using journal profiling and co-word analysis in comparison with the relevant and adjacent domains. Firstly, by extracting and comparing topic terms, we calculate the similarity of academic journals of the three domains, KFL, teaching Korean as a Native Language (KNL), and Korean Linguistics (KL). The result shows that the journals of KFL form a distinct cluster from the others. The profiling analysis and co-word analysis are then conducted to visualize the relationship among all the three domains in order to uncover the characteristics of KFL. The findings show that KFL is more similar to KNL than to KL. Finally, the comparison of knowledge structures of these three domains based on the co-word analysis demonstrates the uniqueness of KFL as an independent domain in relation with the other relevant domains.

Abstract

Even though the overall scholarly community has recognized a dramatic growth and changes in the Information Science research in Korea over the last few decades, there are still only few studies that have identified the changes in terms of long-term and dynamic point of view. We have analyzed 1,007 IS-research articles from leading Korean journals in KCI (Korea Citation Index), published between 2000 and 2011. To discern the trendline of changes in research interests over time, we conducted a time-series analysis by developing grounded subject scheme from the article set and checking the growth rate of the number of published articles and title keywords. A comparative analysis was also conducted by constructing and comparing co-word maps over time to discover visible changes in research topics over this 12-year period of the IS-research in Korea. As a result, we identified some developments and transformations in major subject areas and knowledge structure of the IS-research in Korea over time. The major trend we discovered is that IS-studies over the 12-year period evolved from system-oriented research to library-application research. The changes are especially observed in knowledge management, Web-based system evaluation, and information retrieval areas. When compared to the results of other studies, the result of our study may serve as an evidence of the localization of Korean IS-studies in the first decade of the 21st century.

Abstract

This study compared and analyzed weighted network centrality measures supported by Opsahl’s tnet and Lee’s WNET, which are free softwares for weighted network analysis. Three node centrality measures including weighted degree, weighted closeness, and weighted betweenness are supported by tnet, and four node centrality measures including nearest neighbor centrality, mean association, mean profile association, triangle betweenness centrality are supported by WNET. An experimental analysis carried out on artificial network data showed tnet’s high sensitiveness on linear transformations of link weights, however, WNET’s centrality measures were insensitive to linear transformations. Seven centrality measures from both tools, tnet and WNET, were calculated on six real network datasets. The results showed the characteristics of weighted network centrality measures of tnet and WNET, and the relationships between them were also discussed.

Abstract

The early history of foreign Protestant missionaries in Korea has begun in the late 19th century, when they came to work as professionals such as teachers, medical doctors, etc. as the nation opened its door to western culture with the fall of national isolationism. Their records are considered crucial resources that enable us to shed new light on modern Korean history, politics, economy and society beyond mere religious value. Despite the recognition of such historic value of early missionary resources, however, there has been serious lacking of a systematic attempt to develop policies and plans for making it easy to collect, preserve and access the resources. Up to date, the records of early Protestant missionaries, in diverse forms of mission reports, books, periodicals, personal diaries, letters and photos, are scattered around various places, including their home country churches, governments, libraries, museums, research institutes and homes. Therefore, this research aims at providing basic resources on the archival status of early Protestant missionaries in Korea, needed for developing a sustainable and systematic digital archive system, through the investigation of early foreign missionaries’ resources and in-depth interviews of experts. The study covers the period of 1800s to 1910, that is from the beginning of Protestant missionaries entering into Korea until the start of the Japanese annexation in 1910.
