Abstract

The aims of this study were to provide a global overview of research trends in information science and to trace its changes in the main research topics over time using trends analysis. The study examined the topics of research articles published in Journal of Korean Society for Information Management between 1984 and 2009. Rather than taking a single snapshot of a given point in time, this study attempted to present a series of such pictures in order to identify trends over time. The fairly arbitrary decision was taken to divide the period under consideration into three ‘publication windows’: 1984-1994, 1995-2002, 2003-2009. The study revealed that the most productive areas were ‘Information Service’, followed by ‘Information Organization’, and ‘Information System’. The most productive sub-areas were ‘Library Service’, ‘User Study’, ‘Automatic Document Analysis’, ‘ILS’, ‘Thesaurus/Ontology’, and ‘Digital Library’. From the comparisons of intellectual structures of title keywords, the key research area in the field of Information Science was ‘Information Retrieval’. The studies of IT applications and service system evaluation have been expanded.

Abstract

The growth of IT technology and the popularity of network based information sharing increase the number of digital contents in military area. Thus, there arise issues of finding suitable public information with the growing number of long-term preservation of digital public information. According to the source of raw data and the time of compilation may be variable and there can be existed in many correlations about digital contents. The business service ontology makes knowledge explicit and allows for knowledge sharing among information provider and information consumer for public digital archive engaged in improving the searching ability of digital public information. The business service ontology is at the interface as a bridge between information provider and information consumer. However, according to the difficulty of semantic knowledge extraction for the business process analysis, it is hard to realize the automation of constructing business service ontology for mapping from unformed activities to a unit of business service. To solve the problem, we propose a new business service auto-acquisition method for the first step of constructing a business service ontology based on Enterprise Architecture.

Abstract

Library classification system is based upon academic disciplines, However, it is difficult to classify for Internet resources due to its lack of up-to-datedness and practicality. Especially, headings of Korean Decimal Classification need to reflect practical aspects and it should be also developed for classification of web based resources. The purposes of this study are to analyze the structures of directory classifications in Internet resources and to suggest additional headings of KDC as a practical library classification as well as a classification system for internet resources. Directory classification systems of Naver, Yahoo, Kyobo Internet book store, Amazon were selected and their food and culture subjects were analyzed for this study. The headings of KDC were compared to them and new possible headings were suggested with reference of NDC and DDC in the area of food and culture. This study provided a way of developing KDC for a classification system for Internet resources as well as library materials.

Abstract

This study aimed at developing preservation metadata elements and its applications for research information which is considered as a valuable digital resource these days. Specifically, the developed preservation metadata intends to provide a basis for the research information of the government-funded research institutes in economic and social science fields which are major knowledge producers of national policy. To ensure the interoperability of the research information across various departments and organizations, this study compared the elements from the CERIF(European Standard) and those from the PREMIS Data Dictionary which is based on OAIS reference model (ISO 14721). Based on this comparative analysis, this study developed complementary preservation metadata elements based on the two standards’ characteristics. Consequently, this study suggested a new preservation metadata elements and its applications that are compatible between the two systems and can be implemented in practice.

Abstract

With the advent of uniquitous life, changes of users’ demands make a public library accomplish roles and functions of a complex service center providing information, education and culture service. As a multi-function center, a public library provides various services based on physical and digital space in ubiquitous environment. Information commons is a basement of physical space in an u-Library. Especially, with the advent of ubiquitous environment, design and use of physical space will be a critical issue for a public library to perform its role and function as a multiple complicated space. This study derives facilities and components for designing and implementing information commons in a public library as a physical space. To perform the goals, this study focuses on the newest trends and requirements through literature study, case study and survey. As a result, this study proposes components of facility and principles of design to implement information commons as a physical space in a public library.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model of patent citation counts based on major factors which affect patent citation. To this end, we performed multiple regression analysis between the patent citation counts and five explanatory variables such as the number of pages, the number of claims, the reference-average-citation rate, the strength of bibliographic coupling, and the document similarity proved as having 5% or more standardized variances(r2) with patent citation counts, with a test dataset of U.S. patents in five subject fields. As a result, our prediction models showed 58.3% to 89.6% predictability depending on subject fields and revealed the document similarity has the highest impact on citation counts among the five predictive variables in all the subject fields. The result of comparison between the predicted citation counts and the actual ones confirmed the usefulness of the citation prediction models built for each subject field.
