Since the Web is dynamic, it is necessary to analyze scholarly Web space with both quantitative and qualitative methods for better understanding of communication characteristics. In this study, we analyzed contents of pages and links to ascertain the characteristics of Korean scholarly Web space in terms of network structure and communication behavior. The result shows that the structure of the original network with all the external links remained is not much different from that of the network with activated external links only. However, the purposes of linking vary among scholarly institutions. The centrality measures correlate more strongly with the clustering coefficient than with the constraint index implying the similar explanatory power of the two types of structural indices.
The purpose of this study is to suggest how the classic thesaurus structure of terms and links can be mined and updated from Wikipedia encyclopedia, which is the best practice of collective intelligence. In a comparison with ASIS&T thesaurus, it was found that Wikipedia contains a substantial coverage of domain-specific concepts and semantic relations. Furthermore, it was resulted that the structural characteristics of Wikipedia, such as redirects, categories, and mutual links are suitable to extract semantic relationships of thesaurus. It is needed to apply to update various thesauri, including multilingual thesaurus, in order to generalize the results of this research.
By exploring plausible relations between factors of service quality and user satisfaction, this study has derived significant determinants of user satisfaction. Based on the analytical findings, this study suggested practical measures to enhance user satisfaction of special libraries. If we determine the priority order of three dimensions of service quality depending on specialized areas of special libraries, and revise the items of higher correlations with user satisfaction, then we could effectively and efficiently level up user satisfaction of special libraries.
In this research, we attempt to discuss about the subject reference service from a marketing point of view, especially from a perspective of customer relationship management(CRM), and examine how this service actually functions to build the relationships with users of academic libraries, especially with faculty members. To carry out the research, a focus group interview was conducted with subject specialists, and also individual in-depth interviews with faculty members. In addition, we also discuss about characteristics of subject specialists which affect the relationship with the faculty members in a college environment. This study is meaningful as it discussed purposes of and characteristics in subject reference service from user' viewpoint and the perspective of CRM.
As the development of the new integrated KORMARC format is completed and the problems of KORMARC aroused by different formats by different material types are settled, librarians’ interests have increased in adopting the new integrated format. This article attempts to demonstrate the necessity of adopting the new format and suggests some considering points in its application process. To effectively adopt the new format, firstly the scope of new format application should be decided, and then data conversion and related program development should be followed. It is hoped that this article will raise the understanding of the integrated KORMARC format and give some guidelines to libraries considering its adoption and library system vendors.
The basic rights of the public for sustaining public accountability relations between public sector organizations and the citizens is the accessibility to information of public sector organizations. Public organizations in Korea get checked under multiple public accountability relations, which increases steadily the information provision requests from stakeholders. To respond these requirements effectively and efficiently, public sector organizations are required to transform their information management regime to comply with accountability-oriented settings. This study (1) suggests procedures and methods to select ‘information for accountability’ from the organization's whole information as an important object to be managed, (2) suggests procedures and methods to establish control criteria for the organization to manage its information for accountability in appropriate ways, and (3) gives an example of applying the procedures and methods to the specific context of universities' information disclosure. The procedures and methods suggested are described from a viewpoint of the consulting for the accountability information management regime.
The study proposed the algorithm for automatically summarizing the audio information from a video and then conducted an experiment for the evaluation of the audio extraction that was constructed based on the proposed algorithm. The research results showed that first, the recall and precision rates of the proposed method for audio summarization were higher than those of the mechanical method by which audio extraction was constructed based on the sentence location. Second, the proposed method outperformed the mechanical method in summary making tasks, although in the gist recognition task(multiple choice), there is no statistically difference between the proposed and mechanical methods. In addition, the study conducted the participants' satisfaction survey regarding the use of audio extraction for video browsing and also discussed the practical implications of the proposed method in Internet and digital library environments.
The purpose of this study is to examine the causal relationships among knowledge management(KM) influence factors(leadership, learning culture, member' attitude, reward, knowledge quality, KMS quality), KM activities(knowledge creation, knowledge sharing), KM performance in public enterprise. The results of data analysis by structured equation model(SEM) indicate that learning culture, knowledge quality and KMS quality significantly influence the knowledge creation and sharing. Member' attitude has significant influences on the knowledge creation. And knowledge creation and sharing have a significant affect on KM performance. Based on the results, the potential implications of the strategy for effective knowledge management are discussed.
Local culture is a cultural heritage that has come down from generation to generation in the natural environment of a region. It includes history, tradition, natural features, art, and historic relics. The Academy of Korean Studies has complied “The Encyclopedia of Korean Local Culture” using those local culture contents. Local culture content shave the features of documentary, such as authenticating the source, and managing hierarchy structure. Thus, to deal with local culture contents, a “circular knowledge information management system” is sought for that helps basic, fragmentary, and high-level information to circulate to create new knowledge information within the system. A user of this circular knowledge information management system is able not only to collect data directly in it, but also to fetch data from other database. Besides, processing the collected data helps to create new knowledge information. But, it’s very difficult to sustain the features of the original hierarchy bearing meaning contained in the various kinds of local culture contents when building a new database. Moreover, this kind of work needs many times of correction over a long period of time. Therefore, a system in which compilation, correction, and service can be done simultaneously is needed. Therefore, in this study, focusing on the case of “The Encyclopedia of Korean Local Culture”, I propose a XML-based digital compilation management system that can express hierarchy information and sustain the semantic features of the local culture contents containing lots of ancient documents, and introduce the expanded functions developed to manage contents in the system.
The study aims at investigating students' behaviors and perceptions regarding the collaborative learning based group project using the wiki environment. The study utilized Google Sites as a case, and analyzed file unloads, the use of web pages, navigation bars, and comments as well as surveys. The study discusses main characteristics of students' activities in the collaborative learning group project, which are drawn from the analysis of students' behaviors and perceptions. The study also provides implications for improvement of wiki environment to support collaborative learning in education.
Identifying optimal feature sets in Text Categorization(TC) is crucial in terms of improving the effectiveness. In this study, experiments on feature expansion were conducted using author provided keyword sets and article titles from typical scientific journal articles. The tool used for expanding feature sets is WordNet, a lexical database for English words. Given a data set and a lexical tool, this study presented that feature expansion with synonymous relationship was significantly effective on improving the results of TC. The experiment results pointed out that when expanding feature sets with synonyms using on classifier names, the effectiveness of TC was considerably improved regardless of word sense disambiguation.
This research evaluated Information Application Mechanism based on university student's preference. In other words, the research content is analyzing what is the most effective learning method for lectures. To obtain this research objective I've done some research in theoretical research and pervious research related to informational mechanism. I also analyzed the degree of understanding in learning-efficiency with students based on lectures using various information mechanisms. For the data gathering I've surveyed 82 students living in Busan, and used the survey sheets to gather data, I made the survey sheet with nominal and interval parts to make the analyzement of data easier. The research result is down below. First, It shows that the students with higher understanding in IT preferred lectures with “PPT”s. Second, The “PPT” preference group thought that the “PPT” teaching method is more effective than other methods. Third, The “WRT” preference group thought that the “WRT” teaching method is more effective than other methods. Forth, Both groups gave each method a 3.08 and 2.95 as a total mean value out on a 1-5 scale showing not much difference. However this research has a research limitation like other researches. In other words, there can be some distortion of information when using the interview method to gather data. The researches from now on will need to organize groups by information mechanisms and research the learning-efficiency with each mechanism.
This research applied the concepts of IT architecture and IT governance for managing with an integrated computing environment and organized structure, which base a digital library’s management and operation. It also aims to analyze the structural system between information technology of human resources and strategy alignment elements of business, which both constitute the core content. Social network analysis software was used to investigate the complicated relationship between IT and business-related strategy alignment elements. The following is the results of carrying out this research on the social network structure and features of strategy alignment elements for a digital library. First, analysis indexes for strategy alignment elements and social network of a digital library were developed. Second, an analysis model was designed based on the analysis index for social network as to strategy alignment elements. Analysis model was appraised by collecting social network datasets for such strategy alignment elements as Communications, Competency and Value, Governance, Partnership, Scope and Architecture, and Skills against the Business strategy, Information strategy, Business and Technology of a digital library. As for the content of analysis, social network structure and specific features were analyzed in relation to a digital library’s (1) General social network, (2) Structure of strategy alignment elements, (3) Strategy fit and Functional integration.
The role of digital content identification system is being considered as a useful solution for the content management system and service system. Integrated Copyright Number(ICN), only one domestic identifier to the managing of copyright, can provide the service model in the copyright industry, because it include the information of copyright between the creator and the service provider on the digital work. Universal Content Identifier(UCI), has developed on the focus of digital content service, is somewhat lacking on the copyright management, but it is expected that systematical management and distribution system for copyright and digital work to be able to build as that make up for disadvantage with each identifier's advantage by UCI associate with ICN. In this context, This article can suggest the efficiency integrated structure and the service scenario. Therefore it is contribute to the efficient using and the effective running in the digital identification system.
Since libraries first used RFID systems in the late 1990's, there is growing debate about the advantages and disadvantages of HF and UHF RFID systems. This study tries to explore practical issues in HF and UHF RFID systems especially in the areas of system characteristics and advantages and disadvantages affecting technology implementation to libraries. This study investigates the current status of RFID systems in Korean libraries, and analyzes the best practices of four libraries(two libraries in HF and two libraries in UHF respectively). Also, this study describes functional characteristics of HF and UHF RFID systems, debates on frequencies in ISO/DIS 28560, and the opinions of both manufacturers which provide RFID systems to libraries and librarians who use HF and UHF RFID systems in their libraries.
This study considered the developing course on evaluation indicators of military library which published in 2007, and applied them to 84 military libraries in 2008. By analyzing the results from applying, this study also tried to find more effective evaluation indicators which are available properly. Through the output analysis of documental evaluation and actual inspection, which performed by ten organizations, on military library, revised and completed 28 indexes of 8 classes plan, finance, service, collection management etc. and some of their evaluation scales. For accurate, objective evaluation, it is suggested that the navy and the air force libraries which have different military traits have needs for grouping separately from the army libraries, and also proposed to make standard of research on the actual condition for military libraries that can be used in each military line.
There are some limitations in the existing bibliometric methods to satisfy the various requests of the interest parties including researchers, managers, policy makers to identify 1) which research group or researcher is the key player, and the overall trends of the particular technological sub-fields, 2) which research groups, institutions or countries mainly use their research outputs, 3) what are the spin-offs from research outputs to some scientific and technological fields, 4) in which levels they are when comparing their quantitative and qualitative research outputs to those of other competitive institutions. It is essential to develop new informetric indicators and methodologies in order to satisfy stakeholder's various demands and to strengthen qualitative analysis in measuring research performance. This study suggested informetric indicators such as article quality index, citation impact index, international cooperation index, excellent article production index and methodologies including citation analysis, text mining.
It is very important for libraries to provide their patrons with spaces that are used comfortably. In this paper, first we propose some improvement plans for space organizations of Gwacheon Public Library based on its patrons' behavioral research. It has a big meaning from the view of library marketing, which aims at improving patrons' satisfaction. Then we investigate how study tables are used based on the data taken at Kyushu University Library in Japan. Finally we put some proposals on libraries' space organization based on these investigations.
Statistics items required by National Library Statistics System are based on data for library evaluation and policy making of library management from a theoretical standpoint. However, It is realized there are differences between Statistics items required by National Library Statistics System and those can be collected at the field of public libraries. In accordance with this point, this paper contained an analysis of a working diary log of public libraries as a basic material able to collect data at the field of public libraries and also surveyed the present usage situation of Library Management Program able to automatically collect data to recognize that National Library Statistics is reliably or validly objective data. An analysis data of this research will be a basic material to plan the standard guide of a working diary log of public libraries from now on.
Rapid change in information use environments that corresponds with the development of new technologies requires a new perspective in examining information source uses and information services. As understanding information seeking behaviors is an essential element for improving information services, the changing information seeking behaviors should be examined in a timely manner. While several prior studies focus on this topic, few studies deal with medical doctors’ information seeking behaviors especially focusing on information seeking in both medical practices and research. Thus, this study aims to explore the information seeking behaviors of medical doctors who are both medical practitioners and researchers. Data were obtained by open-ended and semi-structured in-depth interviews during one month from April to May, 2009. The interview-question topics ranged from research contexts, medical-practice-related information seeking behaviors, favorable information sources, and information search process and satisfaction. Findings include that, for research purpose, digital journal articles accessed through the PubMed were more favorable sources while, for practice purpose, printed textbooks were preferred. Overall, the most-frequently-used sources were PubMed and articles because medical doctors regard the reliability and authority very highly.
The aim of this study is to apply latent semantic indexing(LSI) techniques for efficient automatic classification of opinionated documents. For the experiments, we collected 1,000 opinionated documents such as reviews and news, with 500 among them labelled as positive documents and the remaining 500 as negative. In this study, sets of content words and sentiment words were extracted using a POS tagger in order to identify the optimal feature set in opinion classification. Findings addressed that it was more effective to employ LSI techniques than using a term indexing method in sentiment classification. The best performance was achieved by a supervised LSI technique.
