Abstract

This study attempted to reveal the characteristics of the Y generation, to derive the services of the next generation digital library, and to compare differences between the demands of the baby boom generation and the Y generation to some extent. As a result, first, it is shown that the digital device the Y generation uses the most, was a cell phone or smartphone, followed by desktop PC, notebook PC, and digital camera. Although there were some differences, the Y generation’s use ratio of digital devices was substantially similar to the baby boomers’. Second, there was a significant difference between the Y generation and baby boom generation in terms of using digital services. While the Y generation used internet portals the most, the baby boom generation used e-mail service the most. Third, we surveyed the services which the Y generation and baby boom generation require for the next generation digital libraries, by grouping as follows: the cloud service, infinite creative space (maker space), big data, augmented reality, Google Glass, context-aware technologies, semantic services, SNS service, digital textbook service, RFID and QRCode service, library space configuration, a state-of-the-art display technology, and other innovative services. While the most demanded service by the Y generation was big data service, the baby boom generation most demanded digital textbook service.

The purpose of this study is to examine how the commonly known profile of public library users was described, by reviewing the literature published in the United States before the 1990s, when information environment of the public has been drastically changed. The profile of users as the socio-economically advantaged, active participants, and communication elites, has little changed since Berelson's study in the 1940s. Continuing research on users, however, are still needed to better understand their needs and behavior, facing the change since the 1990s.

Abstract

In the current information environment, the concept of a website has been transformed from the repository of information to means of accessing information which can communicate and interact with users. To function well as an accessing tool to information, the information embedded in a website should be organized in a way that users can easily understand the whole informational structure. This aspect of a website might be more important to a university's website. However, the informational structures which current university's websites adopt do not reflect their users' information needs. They construct their structure uniformly, and it causes the decrease of the websites' usability. To solve these problems, this study proposes a new and systematical way of constructing a university's website which can reflect users' information needs and ensure the usability of the websites.

Abstract

This study reports on the motivational use of special libraries from a user’s perspective that investigated four motivational components: attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) of the library users. Even though special libraries received relatively little attention compared to public libraries, special libraries could fill the niche of public libraries for the special and specific needs of the community in the current library environments in South Korea. Qualitative data were collected through individual interviews and forty people participated in the project. The findings of this study show the four themes (ARCS) that users need motivation as a way to start using a special library, thereby staying focused and revisiting the library. It is possible that the ARCS model will contribute to the implementation, application, and practice of both special libraries and their services in the library environment. The results are expected to expand our knowledge on the motivational ARCS use of special libraries and to serve as basic data when designing motivational strategies and plans of the systems for special libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how individuals assess Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) transliterated bibliographic information on current library catalogs. Two separate studies, a survey and an experiment, were conducted using the WorldCat system. Users noted that Romanization has many issues which can inhibit user’s ability to understand the transliterated bibliographic information even when it is in the person’s own native language and even when the individual had extensive experience with transliteration systems. The experimental results also supported these findings: participants had better results and satisfaction when looking for information written in English than when searching for transliterated information written in their native language. Implications for future research suggests a need to investigate user preferences for translation vs. transliteration of bibliographic information. This study proposes consideration of using English translation as a parallel link with CJK Romanization for bibliographic information.

Abstract

This exploratory study outlines the rationalization of why Ontology’s taxonomy requires a strong hierarchy, accuracy, and interoperability in order to be used as a successfully re-useable information management system. Finding the relevant information in a plethora of possible resources by bridging the gap between the user’s needs and the resources of the information technology system is the goal that the information management field should find a way to achieve. This study is based on discussions and interviews with a taxonomist, information architect, and information manager, whose discussions were based on the usability and interoperability of the knowledge based information systems. These professional perspectives are necessary as they are the liaison between users and the information technology group. We found that in order for information managers to ensure successful sharing of knowledge across the end users, a common sense language must be issued in order to achieve reasoning for the artificial intelligence system.

Abstract

With the purpose of enriching existing catalogues with FRBR, which is the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, in mind, this paper aims to evaluate the impact of bibliographic ontology on the overall system’s performance in the field of literature. In doing this, OCLC’s FictionFinder (http://fictionfinder.oclc.org) was selected and qualitatively evaluated. In this study 40 university seniors evaluated the following three aspects using the ‘transferring thoughts onto paper method’: 1) In which ways is this FRBR-aware bibliographical ontology helpful? 2) Are the things which are initially attempted to be helped being helped? 3) Would users seeking one work in particular also see all other related works? In conclusion, this study revealed that, as Cutter claimed in his 2nd rule of the library, collocations give added-value to the users and overall ontology provides better interface and usefulness. It also revealed that a system’s evaluation with qualitative methodology helped to build full pictures of the system and to grip the information needs of the users when the system is developed. Qualitative evaluations, therefore, could be used as indicators for the evaluation of any information retrieval systems.
