디지털보존은 디지털콘텐츠를 관리하고 있는 대학도서관에서는 또 하나의 중요한 업무로 인지되고 있다. 본 연구는 대학도서관에서 이루어지고 있는 디지털보존에 대한 실태를 파악하기 위하여 전국 4년제 대학의 대학도서관 중 디지털콘텐츠를 구축하고 있는 102개 도서관을 대상으로 디지털보존 요건에 대한 담당자의 인식과 디지털보존 실무 현황 및 그 수준을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 대다수의 디지털보존 담당자들은 진본성 보장을 가장 중요하게 여겼고, 정책 및 업무절차가 적합하게 수립되어야 하며 담당자는 우선적으로 디지털보존에 대한 전문지식을 갖추어야 한다고 하였다. 또 기관의지의 부재와 예산확보의 어려움이 디지털보존의 가장 큰 장애 요인이었으며 디지털보존 계획 및 정책수립에 대한 교육이 가장 필요하다고 하였다. 또한 디지털보존에 대한 인식 및 실태가 대학규모와 콘텐츠구축 규모에 따라 차이가 있을 것이라 보고 규모별로 서로 비교한 결과, 규모와 상관없이 인식과 실무는 거의 유사한 것으로 나타났다. 대학의 규모와 콘텐츠 구축의 규모가 크면 클수록 디지털보존 수준에 대한 평가는 높았지만, 전체적으로 현재의 국내 대학도서관의 디지털보존 수준은 미흡하다고 보았다. 따라서 앞으로의 대학도서관은 디지털보존을 위한 정책 및 업무절차를 미래지향적으로 수립하고 디지털보존을 위한 기술적 역량을 확장시켜야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Digital preservation becomes, nowadays, one of the important business process in the academic libraries. This study is to investigate the librarians’ perception on digital preservation requirements and to analyze the business practices of the digital preservation and digital preservation level in the 102 academic libraries. In results, it is found that the digital preservation specialists in academic libraries have almost same perception on basic policies and direction. Also, the study finds that the important function of digital preservation is to secure authenticity and integrity; policy and expertise are the most important key components for digital preservation; the most frequently reported barriers to preservation are the lack of willingness and funding problems; most librarians want to learn and train how to establish preservation planning and policy. In general, most librarian think that the level of digital preservation in the academic libraries is insufficiency. Therefore the academic libraries should establish the relevant digital preservation policy and business workflows and to develop capacity of digital preservation.

현재와 장래에 이용될 신뢰할 수 있는 디지털 정보를 유지하고, 가치를 부여하는 디지털 큐레이션은 전문도서관에서의 중요한 업무로 인지되기 시작하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 지속적으로 변화하는 디지털정보 환경 하에서 전문도서관이 수행하고 있는 디지털 큐레이션 업무에 대한 전반적인 실태조사와 현재 전문도서관에서 수행되는 큐레이션 업무 수준 및 전문도서관 사서가 인지하는 큐레이션 업무의 중요도 정도를 파악하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 먼저 디지털 큐레이션 프로세스를 대표할 수 있는 활동범주와 이에 해당되는 세부업무를 도출한 후, 이에 대한 전문도서관의 수행정도와 중요정도를 조사하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 전문도서관의 디지털 큐레이션 활동은 전반적으로 미흡하였고 이에 대한 중요도 인식도 그다지 높지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 전문도서관 사서들이 기관으로부터 지원을 받지 못하는 어려움을 겪고 있고 내부적으로는 장기적인 정책 및 업무절차를 수립하지 못하여 체계적인 디지털 큐레이션을 못하고 있으며, 셋째, 사서들은 여전히 도서관의 전통적인 업무 사이클인 정보조직-소장-이용을 중요시 여기고 이 업무들을 중심으로 하여 디지털 큐레이션 활동을 수행하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 새로운 개념으로 새로운 실무와 기술을 익혀야 수행할 수 있는 디지털 보존에 대한 중요도 인지와 이와 관련된 기술적 역량을 확장시키는 노력이 요구됨을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
Digital curation which maintains digital information over time and adds value becomes, nowadays, one of the important business process in the special libraries. This study is to investigate the business practice level of the digital curation in the special libraries and the librarians’ perception on the importancy of digital curation. In results, it is found that most librarian, in general, think that the level of digital curation practice in the special libraries is insufficiency. Also, the study finds that the librarians of special libraries have difficulties in terms of the lack of willingness and funding problems as well as the lack of long-term policies and suitable business procedures; they only focus the cycle of information organization-information storage-information use among the 8 processes of digital curation; they need to recognize the importance of digital preservation as one of the essential process of digital curation and make effort to extend technological capacity of digital preservation.
