Abstract

There have been little comprehensive research for studying impact of foreign journals on Korean scientists. The main reason for this is because there was no extensive citation index database of domestic journals for analysis. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) built the Korea Science Citation Database (KSCD), and have provided Korea Science Citation Index (KSCI) and Korea Journal Citation Reports (KJCR) services. In this article, citing behavior of Korean scientists on foreign journals was examined by using KSCD that covers Korean core journals. This research covers (1) analysis of foreign document types cited, (2) analysis of citation counts of foreign journals by subject and the ratio of citing different disciplines, (3) analysis of language and country of foreign documents cited, (4) analysis of publishers of journals and whether or not journals are listed on global citation index services and (5) analysis for current situation of subscribing to foreign electronic journals in Korea. The results of this research would be useful for establishing strategies for licensing foreign electronic journals and for information services. From this research, immediacy citation rate (average 1.46%), peak-time (average 3.9 years) and half-life (average 8 years) of cited foreign journals were identified. It was also found that Korean scientistis tend to cite journals covered in SCI(E) or SCOPUS, and 90% of cited foreign journals have been licensed by institutions in Korea.

Abstract

A large and reliable citation database is necessary to identify and analyze citation behavior of Korean researchers in science and technology. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) built the Korea Science Citation Database (KSCD), and have provided Korea Science Citation Index (KSCI) and Korea Journal Citation Reports (KJCR) services. In this article, citing behavior of Korean scientists on Korean journals was examined by using the KSCD that covers 459 Korean core journals. This research dealt with (1) statistical numeric information of journals in KSCD, (2) analysis of document types cited, (3) ratio of domestic to international documents cited and ratio of citing different disciplines, (4) analysis on immediacy index, peak time, and half-life of cited documents, and (5) analysis on impact of journals based on KJCR citation indicators. From this research, we could find the immediacy citation rate (average 2.36%), peak-time (average 1.7 years) and half-life (average 5.2 years) of cited journals in Korea. We also found that the average journal self-citation rate is more than 50% in every field. In sum, citing behavior of Korean scientists on Korean journals was comprehensively identified from this research.

과학이 기술발전을 이끄는 주요 추진력이며 기술혁신이 궁극적으로 경제발전에 기여한다는 것이 밝혀짐에 따라 선진국은 과학과 기술간 상호작용을 중요하게 다루고 있다. 그러나 한국의 기술발전을 이끈 과학적 기반에 관한 연구가 거의 이루어지지 않았으며 한국의 기술과 강력한 연계를 맺고 있는 학문분야에 대한 연구도 미약한 실정이다. 따라서 이 연구는 특허에 인용된 과학논문을 이용하여 과학기술자의 인용행태를 추적하고, 인용행태 이면에 놓인 과학과 기술간 상호작용을 측정하고자 하였다. 과학논문이 특허의 혁신가치에 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써 기술개발에 있어 과학논문의 중요도를 밝히고자 하였다.

Abstract

As the fact that science is the driving force behind technological development and that technological innovation contributes to economic development has been proved empirically convincing, the interaction between science and technology is highly emphasized in advanced countries. But, Korea has not been active in conducting research on science-based technological development and on the scientific fields that have strong relationships with Korean technology. This study attempts to explore the influence of scientific research papers cited in US patents by Koreans on other US patents and identify the interactions between scientific research papers and patents, by examining the scientific references cited in the Korean-originated US patents.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and categorize the content and public use patterns of social scientists’ informal communication activities. Using Twitter data, we identified Korean 736 social scientists who participated in communication activities with the public, and analyzed 4,548 tweets that revealed their informal communication activities. This study is meaningful in that it explored informal communication between social scientists and the public, which was not previously revealed in scholarly communication, and identified the types of informal communication activities, communication media, and collaborative sectors in detail.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an adoptive model of institutional repositories (IRs) by identifying the key factors affecting adoptive intention of IRs and explaining the relations among these factors. Through a survey of 270 researchers and 12 in-depth interviews in the field of physics, mathematics, and life science in Korea, performance expectancy, perceived risks, socio-organizational influence, and individual characteristics were found to have substantial influences on the adoptive intention of IRs. Among the key factors, individual characteristics showed the greatest effect on the adoptive intention of IRs, followed by performance expectancy and other socio-organizational influences except for the perceived risks. Strategies to enhance the adoptive intention of IRs based on analyses of the results were suggested, in terms of the reformation of research assessment system at the national level, strengthening of role of the operational institution, and the need for voluntary scientists-participating service.

본 연구는 과학기술분야 R&D 라이프사이클 각 단계 세부연구 목표를 달성하는 과정에서 이루어지는 정보행동(정보요구, 정보검색, 정보도구, 정보채널, 정보장애)을 과학기술커뮤니티 환경의 맥락에서 분석하였다. 이 연구는 의미형성이론, 일상생활정보탐색이론, 활동이론에 근거하여 과학기술자를 대상으로 질적 인터뷰연구를 통해 이루어졌으며, 연구결과 과학기술분야 R&D 라이프사이클 5단계는 14개의 세부 정보행동 단계로 이루어짐을 밝혀내었다. 과학기술 R&D 연구 세부단계별로 문제상황 극복을 위한 정보행동 규명은 연구자와 연구환경의 변화를 이해할 뿐만 아니라 향후 도서관 및 정보서비스 기관에서 과학기술 전주기적 정보서비스 전략을 수립하는데 기초자료로 활용될 것이다.

Abstract

This study analyzed scientists information behaviors when they engage in solving specific research problems in various situations throughout the entire scientific R&D lifecycle process. In-depth interviews with a total of 24 scientists were conducted in their research laboratories, the scientists’ everyday workplace and the contexts of scientific research. The theoretical and methodological frameworks employed for this study were Dervin’s Sense-making, Savolainen’s Everyday Life Information Seeking, and Engeström's Activity Theory. The findings of this study informed context-specific research and information behaviors of the scientists in the 14 sub stages of the five-stage of R&D lifecycle. Specifically, the study revealed the research objectives and related information behaviors (e.g., information needs, information seeking, information sources and channels, information barriers, etc.) to achieve the objectives at each sub-stage. The study results provided essential information to re-design the information services and strategies that accommodate the scientific R&D lifecycle.

이 연구에서는 연구자의 연구 이력을 분석하기 위해서 White(2000)가 제안한 인용 정체성과 Hellsten 등(2007)이 제안한 자기 인용 네트워크의 두 가지 최신 기법을 비교해보았다. 국내 대표적인 정보학자인 정영미의 연구 성과물을 대상으로 실험적인 분석을 수행해본 결과 두 기법에서 구분한 연구 시기가 동일하게 나뉘었으며 주요 연구 주제도 유사하게 파악되었다. 그러나 인용 정체성 지도에서는 주제영역별로 영향받은 주요 저자를 파악할 수 있는 반면에 자기 인용 네트워크에서는 시기별 핵심 문헌과 선도 문헌이 식별되었다. 따라서 이 두 가지 기법을 상호보완적으로 사용할 때 연구자의 연구 이력에 대해서 풍부한 정보를 획득할 수 있다는 결론을 얻었다.

Abstract

This paper compares two recent methods for exploring a scientist's research history: citation identity and self-citation network. The former is proposed by White(2000), while the latter is suggested by Hellsten et al.(2007). An experimental citation analysis was carried out on the research output of Young Mee Chung, a renouned Korean information scientist. The result shows that the two methods divided the research period into two sub-periods in the same way. They also identified the major research themes very similarly. In the analysis of each method's performance in depth, the two methods revealed different functions to understand a researcher's history. Citation identity was useful to identify authors who have affected Chung's research in terms of research topics. whereas, self-citation network was successful to identify the core papers and leading papers of the research sub-periods. This study indicates the combination of two methods can provide rich information on a scientist's research history.

본 연구는 연구자들의 데이터 공유 행위에 대한 이해에 목적을 두고 국내 생명공학분야 연구자와 연구학생을 대상으로 데이터 공유 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 살펴보았다. 이메일로 수집된 411개의 유효 응답은 PLS-SEM을 이용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 데이터 공유 규범과 학술적 상호주의는 데이터 공유 의도에 직접적으로 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 공동체 신뢰는 학술적 상호주의가 공동체 신뢰와 데이터 공유 의도의 매개변인일 때, 데이터 공유 의도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학술적 평판은 데이터 공유 규범과 학술적 상호주의, 그리고 데이터 공유 규범과 데이터 공유 의도 간의 관계에서, 학술적 상호주의와 데이터 공유 의도의 관계에서 유의한 조절효과를 보였다. 본 연구는 국내 생명공학 연구자들의 데이터 공유 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대하여 Ostrom의 집단행동이론을 적용하여 살펴보았다는 점과 변인들의 영향 관계 안에서 학술적 평판의 조절효과를 발견하였다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다. 이러한 결과는 연구자들의 데이터 공유 행위를 촉진시킬 수 있는 방안으로 학술적인 보상 시스템의 개발의 필요성을 시사한다.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the factors which influence biotechnology scientists’ data sharing intention. This study employed Ostrom’s theory of collective action. The target population of this study includes scientists and students of biotechnology field in South Korea. A total of 411 responses which collected by e-mail were used for the final data analysis. The summary of this study is as follows. First, norm of data sharing and academic reciprocity were found to have significant positive influences on data sharing intention directly. Second, perceived community trust was found to have significant positive influences on data sharing intention when academic reciprocity was the mediator. Third, academic reputation showed the moderating effects on the relationship between norm of data sharing and academic reciprocity, and between norm of data sharing and data sharing intention. These findings show that researchers can approach the data sharing behaviors by using the mechanism of trust, norms, reciprocity, and reputation and indicate necessity for a development of academic reputation system to promote more data sharing behaviors of researchers.

생명과학은 인간이 살아가는데 있어 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 중요한 학문분야 중 하나이다. 국내 생명과학 관련 연구자들은 산학연에 흩어져 중요한 연구를 수행하고 있으며, 이를 통한 연구결과는 다양한 형태(실질적인 연구결과물, 논문, 연구노트, 세미나 자료, 단행본, 교재 등)로 생산되고 있다. KISTI에서는 생명과학 관련 연구정보의 신속한 획득을 위해 생명과학관련 정보를 공유하고 교환할 수 있는 오픈 아카이빙 커뮤니티 (BioInfoNet)를 구축하여 연구자들이 커뮤니티를 발전시켜 가도록 인프라를 제공하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 최근 플랫폼으로서의 웹인 웹 2.0을 기반으로 오픈 액세스가 가능한 생명과학 문헌정보를 수집하여 메타 데이터베이스를 구축하였으며, 이용자들이 자발적으로 주제별 공개 BBS(BioBBS)를 구성하고 운영할 수 있도록 커뮤니티를 설계하고 구현하였다.

Abstract

Life science is one of the most important fields which have direct influence on human life. Many domestic life scientists in the industries, educational organizations and research institutes have been producing important results in a variety of forms such as papers, research notes, presentation materials, books and teaching materials. Open Archiving Community has been constructed in order to share and exchange research information related to life science between researchers. The domestic life scientists can acquire valuable information through the community quickly and efficiently. In this study, the community system has been designed and implemented to provide free access to all data including metadata registry of the bibliographic information on life science and research results accumulated by researchers of their own accord. The community system also has been designed and implemented based on Web 2.0 and provides users with BBS by subjects.

Abstract

Since the 1990s, informetrics has grown in popularity among information scientists. Today it is a general discipline that comprises all kinds of metrics, including bibliometrics and scientometrics. To illustrate the dynamic progress of this field, this study aims to identify the structure and infrastructure of the informetrics literature using statistical and profiling methods. Informetrics literature was obtained from the Web of Knowledge for the years 2001-2010. The selected articles contain least one of these keywords: ‘informetrics’, ‘bibliometrics’, ‘scientometrics’, ‘webometrics’, and ‘citation analysis.’ Noteworthy publication patterns of major countries were identified by a statistical method. Intellectual structure analysis shows major research areas, authors, and journals.
