Abstract

The purposes of this study are to evaluate the navigability of three web-based mapping applications and to suggest how to improve the navigability of all web-based mapping applications. With these purposes, this study conducted a web-based survey congruent with a think aloud and systematic observation for individual participants, followed up by a focus group with all participants. Based on the findings, recommendations are proposed for web-based mapping applications that include a standard click and drag panning function in mapping applications, a scaled zooming option, increased text for icons and buttons, and other potential changes to computer hardware for increased navigability in these applications. By improving the navigability of web-based mapping applications, the learning time may be reduced for each application and the speed at which users’ geographic information needs are met will be quicker.

Abstract

This study examines how and which direction respondents who participated in 5-point Likert scale surveys change their initial responses when they are given an identical second survey after certain treatments. The research employs three identical questionnaires (first, second and third surveys) to analyze survey results based on group differences, kinds of treatment, survey purposes, and response change direction and the degree. This paper concludes that, first, it is significant that specialist groups do not change their initial responses compared to a general librarian group. Second, there are no differences by survey purpose; however, participants tend to change their initial responses by others’ opinions rather than by previous use experiences. Third, participants who initially answered positively tend not to change their responses, and most participants who answered negatively change their initial responses in a positive direction. Fourth, when there are changes, participants change their initial responses by less than two points, and most of them change by one point. Finally, the hypothesis that middle responses change most and that participants who respond at both ends do not change their opinion was rejected by the finding that participants who answered on the negative end tend to change their initial responses in a positive direction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the acceptance of the electronic journals among undergraduate students. Using a survey questionnaire, this study collected the data collected from 813 students taking 11 courses offered in five different universities. The levels of electronic jounal and its service awareness appeared to be low as 63.7% and 59.9% respectively. Only 43.8% of the respondents report their experience of using Korean e-journals. There is a statistically significant difference in use among college groups and students' major of study. E-journals are mostly used off-campus and within the library, using simple search techniques. In spite of difficulties in search and gathering information, the satisfaction level marked above average. Reasons of nonuse are lack of opportunity and knowledge. However, 93.8% of nonusers report a willingness to use the e-journals in the future. LIS students show higher e-journal awareness and use experience compared to non-LIS students. Yet, the levels of using simple search techniques and satisfaction show little difference from those of the non-LIS students. The findings of the study suggest implications to promote the acceptance of e-journals among college students.
