Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain librarian’s perceptions on their users’ library access and its patterns. Interviews with seven library staff reveal physical accessibility issues including spatial relationships between libraries and other facilities such as shopping malls and schools, travel distance, transportation mode, and temporal perspectives of library access. The results from the interviews corroborate the findings from secondary analysis using household travel data. However, interviewees do not have a clear picture of how much their users travel and spend to access their libraries. This is true, even though these factors are critical to analyze physical accessibility. Based on the findings, this study makes recommendations to improve the accessibility of public libraries. Suggestions include the concept of sponsorships with other facilities, the placing of material drop-boxes on the main route, and providing library programs during lunch time.

오늘날 공공도서관은 정보제공뿐만 아니라 문화생활 기능 제공 등 그 역할이 변화하고 있으며, 도서관 공간 역시 도서관의 서비스를 반영해 변화하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 도서관 공간에 대한 탐색적 연구를 수행하고자 한다. 본 연구는 도서관 공간과 이용자의 도서관 인식 간 상관관계를 탐색하고, 도서관의 물리적 특성을 기반으로 도서관 공간 유형을 제안하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위해 관찰조사 및 설문조사를 수행했다. 관찰조사 결과, 도서관의 공간 유형은 ‘분리형’, ‘부분통합형’, ‘완전통합형’ 세 가지로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 제안한 공간 유형의 타당성을 검증하기 위해 통계 분석을 수행한 결과, 공간 유형에 따라 이용자의 도서관 인식과 이용 목적에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 즉, 도서관의 공간 구성에 따라 도서관 공간을 유형화할 수 있으며, 공간 유형이 이용자의 인식에 영향을 미치는 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구는 이제까지 고려되지 않았던 도서관 공간과 도서관 인식 간의 관계를 탐색하고, 공공도서관에 대한 긍정적인 인식을 형성하는데 적합한 도서관 공간 구성을 제안했다는데 그 의의가 있다.

Abstract

The roles of public libraries have been diverse not only provision of information but also provision of cultural programs. According to this trend, the spatial composition of public libraries have been also changed to reflect the diverse roles. This study is conducted to explore the spatial characteristics in public libraries with two objectives: 1) to suggest spatial types in public libraries based on their physical characteristics, and 2) to explore the relationships between the spatial types and users’ perception. To accomplish these objectives, we adopted observation and questionnaire survey as research methods. Consequently, three spatial types of public libraries are identified based on an investigation of several public libraries: divided, partially integrated, and integrated. Then, several statistical analyses, including one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), are conducted with the questionnaire survey data. The results from the statical analyses show that there are significant differences in users’ perceptions and behaviors between the spatial types. That is, the spatial type influences user’s perceptions. This study is meaningful in terms of its first attempt to explore the relationships between spatial factors in libraries and users’ perceptions. Based on this, it is suggested that libraries should consider their spatial structures for developing user’s positive perception on the libraries.

본 연구에서는 특화도서관 이용자를 대상으로 특화서비스 현황, 이용경험 및 전반적인 만족도 등을 조사하고, ISA 기법을 기반으로 특화 주제 자료, 특화서비스 장소, 특화프로그램, 특화 주제 분야 시설 및 환경에 대한 중요도와 만족도를 비교하여, 특화도서관 운영의 문제점과 개선방안을 도출하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 특화도서관의 주제 선정 시, 해당 도서관의 지역적 특징과 역사, 인구분포 등을 반영하여 주제를 선정해야 하며, 지역 주민 및 도서관 이용자의 수요조사가 고려되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 특화도서관은 특화프로그램의 기획 시, 프로그램의 질적 향상을 위해 전문성을 갖춘 프로그램 진행자를 기반으로 하여 차별성 있는 프로그램의 운영을 고려하여야 할 것이며, 또한 충분한 주제 관련 장서와 공간을 확보하고, 더 나아가 장서와 연계하여 프로그램을 기획하여야 한다. 셋째, 특화도서관은 공간은 이용자에게 특화장서와 서비스, 정보서비스 등을 제공하기 위해 자관이 제공하는 특화주제를 서비스하기 적합한 구조여야 한다. 또한 공간을 구성함에 있어 이용자의 요구를 반영하는 것을 고려해야 한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of specialized services, user experience, and the overall satisfaction for the specialized library users, and based on the ISA method, compare the specialized theme data, specialized service place, specialized program, specialized theme area facilities and environment, and derive issues of the specialized library operation and improvement measures. Consequently, first, when selecting the theme of the specialized library, the theme ought to be selected to reflect the regional characteristics, history and demographics of the library, and the demand survey of the local residents and library users would need to be considered. Second, when planning the specialized program, the specialized library ought to consider operating differentiated programs based on the program operator who has the expertise to improve the quality of the program. Furthermore, sufficient theme related books and space must be secured, and moreover, the program must be planned in connection with the book collection. Third, the specialized library should be so structured as to ensure that the space may serve specialized themes provided by the library in order to provide specialized collections, services, and information services for the users. In addition, reflecting the needs of the users in designing the space must be considered.

공공도서관의 효율성을 객관적으로 측정하여 성과관리에 기여하고자 도서관서비스에 내재된 질적 특성을 반영한 효율성 분석모형을 제시하고 이 분석모형을 적용한 실증적 연구를 통해 효율성 제고방안을 모색하였다. 이미 국내외 연구에서 기존 공공부문에서 사용되는 분석기법을 적용하여 효율성을 측정하였으나, 도서관의 특성을 충분히 반영하지 못했고 측정결과에 대한 일반적인 이론도출을 시도한 연구도 없었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 도서관서비스에 내재된 질적 특성을 반영하는 분석모형을 제시하고 분석해봄으로써 효율성 요인을 분석하고자 하였다. 분석결과 현재 공공도서관에 투입량을 기준으로 산출량은 증가될 수 있으므로 현재 투입 수준에 맞게 산출량을 증가시키는 방법을 모색하고 지속적으로 투입양을 증가시켜야 한다. 효율성 영향요인은 이용자수, 물리적 환경, 전문 인력, 문화 프로그램 기획력, 전자자료 등으로 분석되었고, 다중회귀분석을 실시한 결과 이용자수, 전문 인력, 문화프로그램 기획력이 효율성과 인과관계를 갖고 있었다.

Abstract

This study measures the efficiency of public libraries, library services, and management to contribute to the proposed model for efficiency analysis, reflecting the characteristics in public libraries. This analysis model of applying the empirical research pursues the solutions to provide efficiency. Although many attempts have been made domestically and internationally to study the measurement of the efficiency, mere application of analysis techniques used in the other public sectors has led to the inadequate measurement for characteristics of library services. In addition, there has not been any attempt made to deduce a general theory for the study from the measurement results. In this study, an analysis model that reflects the inherent characteristics in library services is suggested to be analyzed empirically, and this leads to the understanding of efficiency factors. The results of the study show that the efficiency of current public libraries can be increased on the basis of input and output. Therefore the commitment to increase the level of output to meet the current need shall continue by the amount, rather than by the commitment to reduce the level of input. Finally, the factors influencing the efficiency are the number of users, the physical environment, professional staffs, events planning, and electronic resources. After analyzing the five factors via multiple regression analysis, three factors such as the number of users, professional staff and events planning proved causal relationship with the efficiency.

본 연구에서는 설문조사를 통해 공공도서관이 디지털통합적 지역사회 구축자로서의 역할에 어느 정도 기여하고 있는지를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 국가도서관통계시스템에 등록된 전국 공공도서관 935개 기관을 대상으로 설문을 수행하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 컴퓨터, 노트북, 스캐너, 태블릿 PC 등 장비 인프라, 인터넷 인프라 등은 비교적 높은 수준에 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 둘째, 이용자가 이용할 수 있는 전자책, 디지털 및 가상참고서비스, 도서관서비스 모바일 앱 등 서비스나 자원은 비교적 높은 수준이나 협업과 그룹작업을 지원하는 소프트웨어나 참여공간의 가용성 등은 상당히 낮게 나타났다. 셋째, 기술과 관련된 리터러시 훈련 비율은 22.4%에 지나지 않았고, 교육주제도 자원탐색 주제로 집중되어 있으며, 화상회의기술 사용법이나 클라우드 컴퓨팅 어플리케이션 교육 등 다소 미래지향적인 기술교육은 하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 문화향유 공간 또는 창의적인 공간으로서의 도서관의 다양한 역할 변화를 모색해야 하는 이 시대의 흐름에 따라 기술 및 장비의 제공확대, 그리고 미래지향적 서비스 및 교육제공을 고려해야 할 것이다.

Abstract

This study tends to apprehend how much public library contributes to a role of upbuilder of digital integrated local society through a survey. For this, I performed the survey on 935 organization of public library in the whole country registered in national library statistical system. As a result, firstly, it’s apprehended that equipment infra, Internet infra, etc like computer, laptop, scanner, tablet PC, etc are in relatively high level. Secondly, service or resource like electronic book, digital and virtual reference service, library service mobile App, etc that users can use are in relatively high level but software supporting cooperation and group task, fusibility of participating space, etc are shown very low level. Thirdly, the rate of literacy training relating to technology were only 22.4%, education subject focused on resource searching subject and somewhat future-oriented technical education like directions of video conference technique, cloud computing application education, etc wasn’t conducted. Finally, we should consider expansion of providing technology and equipment and provision of future-oriented service and education according to a flow of the time that needs to seek change in various roles of library as enjoying culture space or creative space.

본 연구는 오늘날 점차 확장되고 있는 스마트폰을 통한 정보서비스에 대한 이용자 인식과 요구를 알아보았으며, 특히 관련 연구나 서비스 제공이 미흡한 공공도서관에 중점을 두었다. 연구를 위해서는 공공도서관 이용자를 대상으로 설문조사와 면접을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 공공도서관 이용자들은 스마트폰을 통해 도서관 정보서비스를 이용하는 것에 대해 긍정적인 인식과 함께 e-Contents 서비스에 대한 높은 기대를 나타냈다. 그러나 이용자들은 스마트폰이 기존 정보서비스의 혁신을 가져오는 것이 아니라 정보서비스에 대한 또 하나의 접근점으로 작용할 것이라고 인식하고 있었다.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine how users view information services that use today’s rapidly expanding smart phones and what their demands are. The research focus is specifically on public libraries where related studies or the provision of services is still lacking. For this study, users of public libraries were targeted for surveys and interviews. The results that Public library users showed positive views on using library information services and e-contents service on smart phones. But the users viewed smart phones as another point of access in accessing information services, not as something revolutionary to the existing library information services.

본 연구는 도서관에서 제공하는 적극적 정보제공 서비스로서의 테마전시 이용행태를 조사하고, 그 효과로서 이용자의 도서관 이용행태 변화와 인식변화를 확인하고자 하였다. 테마전시를 제공하는 3개 도서관의 7명의 사서와 8명의 이용자 심층인터뷰를 통해 연구 질문 및 설문지를 개발하고, 232명의 이용자를 대상으로 설문 및 통계분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과 테마전시 서비스가 이용자들의 다양한 자료이용을 도울 뿐 아니라, 사서에 대한 인식 및 도서관 평가에 긍정적인 변화를 주고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 각 도서관의 환경과 이용자층에 맞춰 테마전시를 적극적으로 수행할 것을 제안하였다.

Abstract

We investigated the user behavior of the theme display provided by the public libraries as an active information service. Specifically, we wanted to study the library patrons’ library use behavior and perception. There were in-depth interviews with seven librarians and eight patrons to develop a set of research questions and the questionnaire. We conducted the survey with 232 patrons then the statistical analysis. The analysis result revealed that the theme display helped the patrons’ wider use of the library resources and also positively affected patrons’ perception on the librarians as well as the evaluation of the library services. Based on the findings, we recommended the active incorporation of the theme display within the limitation of the libraries’ facility and patrons’ interests.

본 연구에서는 베스트셀러 목록에 포함된 도서의 순위가 공공도서관에서의 평균 대출 건수에 미치는 영향을 패널분석을 통해 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구를 위해 문화 빅데이터 플랫폼을 통하여 국립중앙도서관이 제공하는 데이터를 바탕으로 2018년 1월 1일부터 2019년 12월 29일까지 총 104주 동안의 분석 대상 도서 179권의 공공도서관 대출 데이터 세트를 생성하였고, YES24 웹사이트를 통해 같은 기간 주간 베스트셀러 목록 데이터 세트를 구축하였다. 공공도서관 대출과 베스트셀러 도서 순위 간 정확한 관계를 확인하기 위해 패널자료의 특성을 활용한 분석 방식인 선형회귀모형, 고정효과모형, 확률효과모형 등 세 개의 모형을 비교한 결과, 고정효과모형이 가장 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 순위 데이터 결측값이 47주 미만인 179권의 도서의 자료를 고정효과모형으로 분석한 결과, 도서의 베스트셀러 순위가 한 단계 내려가면 공공도서관에서의 해당 도서 평균 대출 건수가 0.108권 유의미한 수준에서 감소한다는 것을 밝혀내었다. 또한, 베스트셀러 순위가 도서 평균 대출 건수에 미치는 효과가 도서의 내용분류에 따라 상이함을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구는 베스트셀러 순위가 사람들의 도서관 대출행태에 영향을 미치고 있음을 실증적으로 확인한 것으로, 공공도서관에서는 이용자의 요구를 예측하고, 장서 개발 정책 수립에 베스트셀러 목록을 비롯한 사회문화적 맥락을 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the bestseller ranks on the book circulations in public libraries. To achieve this goal, the weekly data sets of 179 books’ library circulation and bestseller list from January 1, 2018 to December 29, 2019 were constructed based on the data collected from BigData MarketC and YES24. Three methods for analyzing panel data including linear regression, fixed-effect, and random effect models were compared, and it turned out that fixed-effect model was better than other methods. The results show that the average ranks of bestsellers were associated with their public library circulations visually. Also, the analysis of fixed-effect model showed that the single rank decline of a book on the bestseller list decreases its average circulation of 0.108 while the size of effect varied depending on subject of books. The study empirically demonstrated the impact of a bestseller list on people’s book circulation behavior, suggesting that public libraries need to reference sociocultural context as well as bestseller book lists to predict library user needs and to formulate collection development policy.

본 연구는 전국적으로 공공도서관 디지털자료실 구축사업이 완료된 이후 약 5년이 경과한 현 시점에서 디지털자료실의 운영 현황을 조사․분석한 결과를 토대로 향후 디지털 자료실의 활성화와 효율적인 운영 방안을 모색해 보았다. 그 결과, 무엇보다도 인프라 측면의 보완 및 개선이 가장 시급한 것으로 드러났다. 또한 공공도서관 디지털자료실의 향후 운영 방안으로는 크게 디지털자료실 통합운영체계 구축과 디지털자료실 기능 다변화를 추진하여야 한다. 먼저 공공도서관 디지털자료실의 운영실태 조사 내용과 활성화 전략을 다각도로 검토한 결과, 현 시점에서는 디지털자료실에서 가능한 부문을 위주로 최대한 통합하여 운영하는 것이 최선의 대안이 될 수 있다. 다음으로 공공도서관 디지털자료실의 기능 다변화는 기존의 디지털자료실 기능에 다양한 유형의 원자료 및 전용 어플리케이션을 활용한 정보의 제작뿐만 아니라 교육 기능, 참고정보서비스 기능, 온라인/오프라인 커뮤니티 형성 및 정보공유 활성화 기능 등을 추가 또는 강화하여 효율적으로 추진할 수 있다. 이를 통해 향후 공공도서관 디지털자료실은 단순한 인터넷 정보의 접근 및 이용을 위한 장소에서 사서와 이용자, 이용자와 이용자간 커뮤니케이션의 활성화는 물론 정보나 지식의 공유 및 협력활동을 위한 온라인/오프라인 공간으로 발전되어야 할 것이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find methods for utilizing digital room in public library and its efficient operation by analyzing the status quo of the digital rooms in public libraries, which had been built nation-widely about 5 years ago. It is found that it is urgent to supplement and improve the infrastructure of them. It is also required to build multi-functional digital rooms and an integrated operational system for digital rooms. Implementation of an integrated operational system, first of all, for applicable sections of digital room may be the best alternative. The multi-functional digital rooms can be built, which, in addition to its traditional function, can include a variety of original information resources and function of information creation using application programs, as well as functions such as education, information services, online/offline community creation, and activating information sharing. In the future, the digital rooms in public libraries must play a significant role as online/offline spaces, which are not the places for use and access to internet information resource, but for information/knowledge sharing and collaborative activities. It also must provide a communication channel between librarians and users as well as among users themselves.

공공도서관 문화프로그램에 대한 중요성이 커짐에 따라 그 경제적 효과에 대하여 전반적으로 평가할 필요성이 제기되어 왔다. 본 연구는 문화프로그램의 경제적 가치를 분석하기 위한 방법으로 기존에 사용되어 온 가상가치평가법의 대안으로 DM 포맷과 IBM 포맷을 제안하였다. 또한 이 모형을 공공도서관이 적용할 수 있도록 사례분석을 통해 그 과정을 구체적으로 설명하고 있다. 이 연구는 가상가치평가법의 바이어스를 최대한 감소함으로써 공공도서관의 정확한 가치를 평가할 수 있는 기본 틀을 마련하였다는 데에 그 의의가 있다.

Abstract

The need for overall assessment of economic effectiveness of library culture program has been suggested, as its importance continues to grow. Our study proposed a new assessment method by applying DM format and IBM format to contingent valuation method that has been used for analyzing the economic value of culture program. This study also illustrates the process through case analysis so that the public library can apply this model. It is meaningful that the study provides basic framework to evaluate the fair value of the public library by minimizing the bias that the contingent valuation method has.
