Abstract

This study investigated what web users share on a health website and how the demographic characteristics of users reflect health information sharing behavior. By using a content analysis method, this study analyzed 1,042 randomly chosen messages in the discussion board of a health website. The results revealed that the health website users emotionally supported other users, provided health information, and built relationships between them. Two third of the health website users shared his/her thoughts or feelings about ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) on the health website and one fourth of the health website users connected with others who had ALS. A half of the users actively provided information as a direct response to a question. No significant differences were discerned with regard to total posting frequency by age and gender effect. However, the male users in the 50s answered questions to others more actively and tried to manage their life better than the other age groups.

Abstract

This study analyzed the effect of perceived interactivity in health information websites on users. First, this study analyzed the effect of users’ individual characteristics on the perceived interactivity. As a result, hypochondriasis had a negative relationship with perceived interactivity, and health literacy had a positive relationship with it. On the other hand, although the perceived interactivity had a positive effect on users’ attitudes toward health information websites and expected outcomes, it did not have an effect on continuous usage intention. However, their attitudes and perceived outcomes had a positive influence on continuous usage intention and at the same time mediated the perceived interactivity. Eventually, the perceived interactivity had an effect on continuous usage intention of health information websites by the medium of other positively related variables.

Abstract

This study is to investigate the effects of personal characteristics and perceived interactivity on acceptance of mobile health information service by applying Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Also it examine whether the perceived interactivity, which is a key variable in the previous research studying the intention of PC-based health information service, works on the mobile environment equally. As a result of the analysis, the relationship between the health hypochondria of personal characteristics and perceived interactivity is negative, and the health concern and perceived interactivity is positive. Also, personal characteristics influence perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of mobile health information service through perceived interactivity. Therefore, the perceived interactivity in the health information service of web and mobile environment is an important variable to mediate or directly affect other variables.

Abstract

Despite the increasing number of international students in Korea, there is a lack of research on the health information-seeking behavior of international students. This study examined the health information search behavior of international students in Korea through a questionnaires and in-depth interviews adopting Critical Incident Technique. Most frequent health information needs that the participants experienced were related to Covid-19 and locating doctors/hospitals. The difficulties in seeking health information were language barriers, lack of knowledge of the Korean medical system, insufficient or overflowing information on the Internet. However, despite the language barrier, international students mainly used Korean sources (friends/family, websites, social media) for searching health information. In order to search health information on Korean websites, they used Google Translator or got help from bilingual friends/family members. The participants who have lived in Korea for a shorter period of time or who have lower Korean language proficiency tend to obtain health information through the community on social networks; whereas the longer the period of residence in Korea and the better the Korean language proficiency, the more likely to use websites. Only 28% of the participants gave positive answers to the question asking their confidence in finding the health information they needed. It is discussed how to help international students find accurate and credible health information.
