Abstract

Authoritative as well as objective information on ranking or dominant research areas of academic departments/schools in a certain discipline is essential for the graduate school applicants. In this study, we performed an informetric analysis to identify dominant research areas in the top 10 U.S. LIS schools. We used two different datasets of research productivity and research interests of the LIS faculty. The correspondence analysis method was employed to graphically display the association between research areas and the LIS schools. We found that the research productivity data collected from SSCI database generated a very informative map presenting which research areas were dominant in which LIS schools. We also found that for the two most productive subject areas in LIS over the past 10-year period, the proportion of research articles in information retrieval decreased to a great extent in the recent 5-year period, whereas that of information seeking behavior showed an almost same degree of increase.

Abstract

The study analyzes mission statements of Library and Information Science schools in the United States. It aims to reveal identities of LIS by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The study examines the strategies or stereotypes of academic mission statements in LIS as a genre. Mission statements are analyzed using discourse analysis to find common ideology using agency, modality, and lexical analysis. A comparative analysis of two mission statements is also conducted within discursive practices to reveal characteristics of two schools. This study has value in that it provides implications for other ideological discussions applicable to LIS.

Abstract

Community colleges are key constituents of higher education in Korea, along with four-year universities. The number of community colleges in Korea also holds significance. However, the main focus of the Master Plan for Library Development decisively lies in university libraries, with little consideration to the poor condition of community college libraries. This study aims to identify problems of community college libraries by conducting a document research on their current standing and, based on that, to present six policy proposals for government support. They are a) to develop library collections based on the school specialty, b) to build theme-oriented libraries, c) to facilitate cooperation between community college libraries, d) to reinforce capacities for library service, e) to improve legal status of community college libraries and develop an evaluation index, f) and to estimate demand and evaluate service quality.

Abstract

This study aimed to construct the Library Map Information System(LMIS) based on the Wiki theory of Web 2.0. We built this system because there was no collective source of information about every library in the world. Also, this system was developed to provide a library location information service by mashing-up with the Google Map. Through this study, the metadata applied to the newly constructed system was developed by using the Delphi method. A total of 13 experts including librarians of schools, public, academic, special, and national libraries as well as LIS faculty members and researchers, were commissioned as Delphi experts. Through three rounds of a Delphi survey analysis, the addition, modification, and deletion of the initial metadata elements was accomplished, and then the library contact/location information, library information, collection information, and event information was proposed. The metadata for LMIS was organized into four sectors and then 49 elements, each assigned to a sector.
