As FRBR defines structural framework based on ER modeling for b ibliographic data elements, an effective tool is required to implement FRBR model. In this implementation of FRBR model based on Topic Maps. To show the e ffectiveness of Topic Maps as the implantation language of FRBR, we implement FRBR mo del of topic-association of Topic Maps conceptually harmonize with entity-relation of FRBR, which means that Topic Maps is suitable for the implementation of FRBR model.
As there are diverse delivery media and forms of information resources, their management schemes are diverse as well. In library community, cataloguing rules for describing information resources such as AACR and KCR have been developed. The efforts to automate management of information resources based on these rules resulted in the development of MARC. However, MARC records are restricted in describing the information resources and MARC has various and distinct characteristics of the structural rigidity, which does not support the representation of extended semantic structures that exist among bibliographic entities. Therefore, since the data model for MARC is single-layer data model, it is not appropriate for describing information resources represented by multi-layer data model which can be used to set up the relationships among various objects in digital libraries. In this paper, we propose an a metadata model for digital libraries based on the IFLA FRBR basic model which supports multi-layer data model and a representation scheme based on XML Schema to manage the metadata about old books, old documents, resource related to music, conferences and seminars.
With the purpose of enriching existing catalogues with FRBR, which is the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, in mind, this paper aims to evaluate the impact of bibliographic ontology on the overall system’s performance in the field of literature. In doing this, OCLC’s FictionFinder (http://fictionfinder.oclc.org) was selected and qualitatively evaluated. In this study 40 university seniors evaluated the following three aspects using the ‘transferring thoughts onto paper method’: 1) In which ways is this FRBR-aware bibliographical ontology helpful? 2) Are the things which are initially attempted to be helped being helped? 3) Would users seeking one work in particular also see all other related works? In conclusion, this study revealed that, as Cutter claimed in his 2nd rule of the library, collocations give added-value to the users and overall ontology provides better interface and usefulness. It also revealed that a system’s evaluation with qualitative methodology helped to build full pictures of the system and to grip the information needs of the users when the system is developed. Qualitative evaluations, therefore, could be used as indicators for the evaluation of any information retrieval systems.
The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) is a “conceptual model of the bibliographic universe” developed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Although some studies have suggested improvements in FRBR, and others explore alternative approaches, less attention has been paid to analyzing the internal coherence and consistency of the FRBR view as presented not only in the FRBR entity-relationship model and text of the FRBR document, but also in the related explanations and presentations of FRBR expositors. Our investigations have noted some interesting discrepancies between the general FRBR approach as presented in various expository documents and the specific account presented in the FRBR ER model and the FRBR document. We see that in one case these discrepancies can be easily remedied by adding additional modeling constructs and assertions, but in another case (the supposed “inheritance” of attributes across the Group 1 entities), there is a substantial difficulty in maintaining a consistent model. We discuss several alternative approaches to enhancing the expressiveness of FRBR in order remedy this problem. We note that none is entirely satisfactory.
The Dublin Core, MARC. IFLA-FRBR user communities are developing international standards for describing textual, physical and audiovisual resources to enable their resources discovery over the Internet. Therefore the metadata interoperability Problem has been exacerbated by the need for more complex metadata descriptions. In this paper we propose a new mechanism for metadata interoperability based on the new semantic web applications : IFLA-FRBR framework, INDECS metadata and an event-aware ABC models. This study introduces a new approach method which is essential to the generation of interoperable metadata descriptions, particularly in the context of multimedia contents.

The current technological revolution pushes forward the innovation in the library information systems. This study proposes functional requirements and an architectural reference model of Semantic Library, recognized as a prototype of next-generation library information systems, that is a seamless convergence of the library information systems and the Internet technologies. Semantic Library can realize semantic interoperability and integration based on ontology and metadata, and also renovate information services for users with openness, sharing, participation and collaboration. Semantic Library will be effectively implemented by means of service-oriented architecture and the logical structure of FRBR. In this study, a reference model of Semantic Library consisting of 6 horizontal layers and 3 vertical elements is presented as a next-generation model of library information systems.
