Abstract

The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) is a “conceptual model of the bibliographic universe” developed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Although some studies have suggested improvements in FRBR, and others explore alternative approaches, less attention has been paid to analyzing the internal coherence and consistency of the FRBR view as presented not only in the FRBR entity-relationship model and text of the FRBR document, but also in the related explanations and presentations of FRBR expositors. Our investigations have noted some interesting discrepancies between the general FRBR approach as presented in various expository documents and the specific account presented in the FRBR ER model and the FRBR document. We see that in one case these discrepancies can be easily remedied by adding additional modeling constructs and assertions, but in another case (the supposed “inheritance” of attributes across the Group 1 entities), there is a substantial difficulty in maintaining a consistent model. We discuss several alternative approaches to enhancing the expressiveness of FRBR in order remedy this problem. We note that none is entirely satisfactory.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to explore FRBR utilities such as work clustering and expression clustering and problems of application of the FRBR by developing work and expression clustering algorithm and implementing it into cataloging system, and to suggest new cataloging rules for FRBR and guideline of MARC description to improve FRBR work clustering. FRBR was suggested by necessitation of collocation function of bibliographic records according to increase of searching materials and multi-version materials, but FRBRization has some problems such as imperfect conversion of bibliographic records to FRBR records and inappropriateness of current cataloging rules for FRBR. Bibliographic records must be processed by FRBR algorithm to construct FRBRized system, but bibliographic records and current cataloging rules couldn't perfectly support FRBRization. Therefore cataloging rules and guidelines of MARC description for FRBR are needed. For constructing FRBRized cataloging system in Korea, it is needed to find problems and solution through FRBR practical application such as developing FRBR algorithm and applying it to cataloging records.

Abstract

New concept of bibliographic data and its scheme are needed to accommodate a change resulting from the emergence of new forms of electronic publishing, and the advent of networked access to information resources. FRBR model was developed for defining functions performed by the bibliographic data with respect to various media, various applications, and various user needs. Several institutions including OCLC and RLG or vendors have tried to implement the FRBR on OPAC systems. The purpose of this study is to propose the strategies for developing bibliographic interface based the FRBR model. This study is to review the representative FRBRized systems and compare the systems regarding on search interface and display interface.

Abstract

With the purpose of enriching existing catalogues with FRBR, which is the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, in mind, this paper aims to evaluate the impact of bibliographic ontology on the overall system’s performance in the field of literature. In doing this, OCLC’s FictionFinder (http://fictionfinder.oclc.org) was selected and qualitatively evaluated. In this study 40 university seniors evaluated the following three aspects using the ‘transferring thoughts onto paper method’: 1) In which ways is this FRBR-aware bibliographical ontology helpful? 2) Are the things which are initially attempted to be helped being helped? 3) Would users seeking one work in particular also see all other related works? In conclusion, this study revealed that, as Cutter claimed in his 2nd rule of the library, collocations give added-value to the users and overall ontology provides better interface and usefulness. It also revealed that a system’s evaluation with qualitative methodology helped to build full pictures of the system and to grip the information needs of the users when the system is developed. Qualitative evaluations, therefore, could be used as indicators for the evaluation of any information retrieval systems.
