Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how individuals assess Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) transliterated bibliographic information on current library catalogs. Two separate studies, a survey and an experiment, were conducted using the WorldCat system. Users noted that Romanization has many issues which can inhibit user’s ability to understand the transliterated bibliographic information even when it is in the person’s own native language and even when the individual had extensive experience with transliteration systems. The experimental results also supported these findings: participants had better results and satisfaction when looking for information written in English than when searching for transliterated information written in their native language. Implications for future research suggests a need to investigate user preferences for translation vs. transliteration of bibliographic information. This study proposes consideration of using English translation as a parallel link with CJK Romanization for bibliographic information.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a method of extracting the most recent information on US patent documents. An HTML paring technique that can directly connect to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Web page is adopted. After obtaining a list of 50 documents through a keyword searching method, this study suggested an algorithm, using HTML parsing techniques, which can extract a patent number, an applicant, and the US patent class information. The study also revealed an algorithm by which we can extract both patents and subsequent patents using their closely connected relationship, that is a very distinctive characteristic of US patent documents. Although the proposed method has several limitations, it can supplement existing databases effectively in terms of timeliness and comprehensiveness.

Abstract

In this study, we analyzed the research trend of social network analysis. We investigated how this topic can be linked to the information science. We analyzed 163 articles that were retrieved from searching “social network analysis” in the keyword search field from 2000 to 2009. The study revealed the fast growth of the research of social network analysis in recent years. Also, the study showed that social network analysis has been applied to many cognate disciplines including management science, education science, and administration science. Finally, the study showed that social network analysis is a field equally important to information science as to other disciplines. Particularly, the study demonstrated that social network analysis can be applied to bibliometrics, including webmetrics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the properties of the tags used in the fiction genre, the structural aspect of the patterns and the contents of the tags by utilizing LibraryThing, where the tags are assigned in work units of FRBR. A comparative analysis was conducted in terms of the level of association between the descriptive terms in bibliography and LCSH terms. The study also examined the sources of the tags not included in the bibliographic descriptions or LCSHs, what aspects of work they represented, and the terms used as tags in relation to the work. By restricting the study to a single genre, a number of tags that reflected the characteristics of fiction (three elements of the fiction which are theme, plot, style and three elements of the fiction composition which are character, event, setting) were extracted. This study finds out the role of the tag making up the taxonomy and proposes a new direction for the tagging system by demonstrating the possibility of using tags as facets in information organization and retrieval.
