대학도서관에서 제공하고 있는 디지털참고봉사의 현황을 이해하기 위하여 전국적인 조사를 수행하여 분석하였다. 2003년 7월 8일부터 7월 22일까지 직접 접속을 통한 관찰과 질문응답 기록을 통하여 데이터를 수집하였다. 우리나라 4년제 대학 중 171개 도서관이 디지털참고봉사를 제공하는 것으로 나타났으며, 접근수준, 명칭, 서비스방식, 웹폼, 서비스정책 등 디지털참고봉사 제공 관련 특성과 이용량, 응답비율, 질문유형 등 이용관련 특성을 분석하였다. 현황과 문제점이 식별되고, 도서관 서비스로 확립되기 위한 제언이 이루어졌다.
Abstract
To understand current state of the digital reference services in Korean academic libraries, a comprehensive examination and analysis was performed. Data was collected from July 8. 2003 to July 22. 2003, through direct site examination and recording the question and answer transcripts. The analysis focused on the provision characteristics and use of the digital reference services. Results revealed interesting findings and related problems. Suggestions for future development are provided.

공공도서관에서 제공하고 있는 디지털참고봉사의 현황과 발전을 이해하기 위하여, 전국의 공공도서관 홈페이지를 직접 접속하여 관찰하고 이용 데이터를 수집하여 분석하였으며. 2003년에 수집하였던 데이터와 비교하였다. 모두 404개의 디지털참고봉사 사이트에 대하여, 접근수준, 서비스방식, 링크명칭, 서비스정책, 웹폼, FAQ 등 서비스 제공 관련 특성을 분석한 후, 15일간 수행된 질문응답 데이터를 수집하여 이용도서관, 이용수준, 응답비율, 질문유형 등 서비스 성능을 분석하였다. 서비스 현황에 대한 이해와 문제점, 그리고 4년 동안에 걸친 변화가 식별되었으며, 향후 발전을 위한 제언이 이루어졌다.
Abstract
To understand the present status and the development of the digital reference service in Korean public libraries, a nationwide site observation was attempted in 2007. The collected data was analyzed, then compared with the previous analysis based on a 2003 data. For the 404 sites offering digital reference, operational characteristics, such as access level, service mode, link description, policy, web form, and FAQ, are analyzed. Performance analysis focused on the presence of question posting, volume of usage, response rate, and types of the questions, for the data collected for 15 days through question and answer transcript recording. Results reveal findings on the present situation as well as changes over 4 years.Related problems are identified. The conclusion includes suggestions for improving digital reference service.

본 연구는 국내 대학도서관의 디지털참고정보서비스 현황을 분석하고 전자게시판을 중심으로 그 이용행태를 분석하여 향후 디지털 참고정보서비스 활성화를 위한 방법을 제언하고자 하였다. 205개 대학도서관 웹사이트를 분석하여 디지털참고정보서비스의 개괄적인 현황을 파악하고, 봉사대상 인구수와 도서관 웹 사이트 접속건수, 참고정보서비스 제공건수를 기준으로 선정된 4개의 대학에 실제 접수된 디지털 참고정보서비스의 질의유형, 답변의 구성형식, 정확성, 응답기간 등을 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과가 대학도서관 디지털 참고정보서비스가 당면하고 있는 현실적 문제점을 파악하고, 이를 개선하기 위한 해결책으로 실제적인 지침과 모형개발의 기초자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study aims to investigate the current state of digital reference services using electronic bulletin boards in Korean academic libraries and to suggest improvements. Through the examination of 205 academic library websites, 56 libraries were identified to use electronic bulletin for digital references. The digital reference service questions and responses from four libraries were further analyzed: the types of reference question, the structure and accuracy of answers, and digital reference completion time. The implications of this study for future research and practice lie in its provision of a systematic way to design practical guidelines for virtual reference services.
